On a recommendation by Andy, whom I met yesterday when watching the Liverpool game. Note to self: It's always good to talk with people. They recommend you stuff. Good stuff.

Update: "Yesterday" is a while ago, I found some new videos.

By far one of the best articles I've read about this topic is here. The approach of consequently looking at EU and NATO from a branding perspective is intriguing, and leads to a few very interesting thoughts. Of course reality is more multi-dimensional than this, but as a means of sharpening/opening perceptions, the brand-centered approach is very nice.

A quote: "[...]state branding is gradually supplanting nationalism. The brand state's use of its history, geography, and ethnic motifs to construct its own distinct image is a benign campaign that lacks the deep-rooted and often antagonistic sense of national identity and uniqueness that can accompany nationalism. By marginalizing nationalist chauvinism, the brand state is contributing greatly to the further pacification of Europe."

Simply brilliant. Glad you said it, whoever you are.

Idiots

13.12.2008, 14:19

Idiots. Idiots, idiots, idiots.
What idiots. Incredible bloody idiots, and their simplistic views of the world, their cheap populism, their pathetic play on fears and silly prejudice.
Embarrassing.

Quote of the day

25.11.2008, 09:49

I like simple truths (at least where they are about true). Even more, I like people who speak simple truths. In this case, Alfred Ritter, one of the owners of Ritter Sport, the German chocolate manufacturer. A quote from an interview with him in today's Spiegel Online:

"If a market grows by 5% per year, but a company aims to achieve a profit of 25% per year, then the company has to take profit away from someone else. Usually, these will be suppliers, employees, or clients."

In addition to these links posted back in March, I just found a very interesting and well-written blog, mostly about issues related with Belarus.

Vocabulary influences

Highly interesting little Wikipedia thing, in this case about different influences on Estonian vocabulary. Helped me to verify numerous theories or assumptions.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a similar page on Wikipedia regarding Latvian and Russian vocabularies. Would have loved to compare a few words.
